They allow the speed of a 3-phase AC electric motor to be altered whenever the behavior of the motor’s load — i.e., the device the motor is driving, such as a pump, fan, conveyor belt or lathe — changes its demands on the motor. By changing its output frequency and voltage, the VFD allows the motor to modify its RPMs to respond to those demands.”
